Professional Guitar Setup
A full set up is the best way to get your instrument playing the best it possibly can.
Guitars from factory can be uninspiring in their setup, and often make the guitar much harder to play than they need to be. They are setup in a way that is quick to do and can shipped out as fast as possible.
I will get the very best out of each guitar and ensure it plays the best it can.
A full setup includes the following:
- Correctly setting the nut height
- Adjust neck relief
- Setting string action height
- Correct string radius
- Intonation
- Oiling/cleaning fretboard, clean guitar body (vintage instruments will not be cleaned unless asked otherwise to do so)
- Set pickup height
- Clean all pots & switches
- Restring (strings not included in price)
- Check & tighten all hardware

Nut height:
This is very important. If set too high, it can lead to intonation issues on the 1st fret as you will push down further than needed. But mainly, this sets how the guitar plays across the fret board, setting this to the correct low height along in harmony with the action at the bridge can lead to a very well comfortable playing guitar. Evenly cut nut slots across all 6 strings keep things consistent. You don’t want strings at different heights up and down at the nut, as this has a knock-on effect all the way across the neck. Very important to get right. If needed each slot will be cut with precision using specialist nut slot files.
Neck relief:
This is critical to getting a consistent even playing guitar. Ideally you don’t need much at all. Too much will look to choking and buzzing high up, and back bow can lead to the first few frets totally choking out.
String height:
Otherwise known as string action. This sets the overall height of the string against the fret board. This is often a personal thing, we are all bult differently, play differently and like different music styles. So, this is important to get right. Some prefer high action, some prefer low, and some prefer effortless really low action. To do this for electric guitars we will adjust the saddles to the desired action and radius of the fret board. For acoustics the saddle us filed down to the desired height.
Intonation:
This will be set to ensure each note is as In tune as possible, set against the 12th fret and adjusted at the saddle end of the instrument. The guitar isnt a perfect instrument, and sometimes there can be a compromise. However with a good setup a near perfect balance can be had. This will make a huge difference to how accurate the guitar sounds, and big or complex chords can sound more beautiful than ever.
Pickup height:
This is often very overlooked and is such an important part to the sound of the guitar, it can make a bigger difference than most think. There are pickup guideline heights, these are great and often I will play the guitar and possibly adjust further from there.
Electronics:
These will checked for any issues and crackling, The pots and switches will be cleaned to help prevent this. Sometimes they do need to be replaced if they are particularly corroded or old.
Re string:
New strings of selected brand, tuning and gauge will go on the guitar.
Clean and Oil guitar:
Fret board with be oiled, frets polished, and body cleaned. Vintage guitars I will only oil the fret board and otherwise left as is.
Hardware check:
All screws and hardware checked and tightened
